Current Project Priorities

Grind Mill Project: Nyanang village in Tibet needs a mill to grind Tsampa (roasted barley flour is a traditional staple) for approximately 500 villagers or 80 households. Although, the primary objective of the mill is not to make profit, it will be operated as a small business for sustainability reasons. The village leader will select a (ready, willing and able) family to operate and manage the mill. The money generated from the mill operation will be used for its maintenance and fuel as well as basic necessity of the family.

grinding millA stream till recently powered the mill in Nyanang village as it is the case traditionally in most Tibetan areas. However, the government has initiated a project that redirects this stream to different villages before reaching it to the current mill location. Thus relocating the mill to a water source is simply too far from these Tibetan families. Funding need: $3,500 will be used to purchase building materials of a home, a motor, grinding machine, transporting supplies and coordinating the efforts.

project siteKhashirong Sanitation Project: Among other issues, rubbish such as bottles, cans, plastic and cardboard, etc. that is discarded by tourists and local people is everywhere. This causes many problems: (1) contaminated drinking water, (2) children (cuts and wounds from broken glass), (3) poisoning animals from eating rubbish, and (4) littering the environment. There is no designated waste bin and recycle bin. Till recently, Tibet did not have bottles and plastics, and people simply do not understand the full impact of litter as we do in the West.

The project is aimed to protect the environment and improve the health of about 700 villagers including children in Khashirong Village area of Kham, Tibet. This will be accomplished by organizing a village-wide site clean-up, building a waste bin, conducting educational awareness training, and installing signboards. Funding need: 6,410 USD or 9,423 AUD.

tractorsTractor Repair Shop: TVP will help to setup a general repair shop that is geared primarily toward repairing tractors and then motorbikes in a village. A former a village leader and skilled repairman will employ four semi-skilled apprentices. Upon completion of this one-year on-the-job training, the apprentices will either help to expand this shop or open their own stores in different locations and train a few apprentices of their own. Funding Needs: $5,000 as seed money so that the shop can use the money toward rent, equipment and tools, supplies and parts, etc.

building a toiletComposting Toilet Project: The primary objective of a Composting Toilet Project is to improve the health and environmental sanitation of approximately 5,000 villagers (nuns and lay people) a village. TVP will accomplish this objective by building two composting toilets and organizing awareness training for about 50 villagers . The second objective of the project is to improve the construction skills of those Tibetans who will build the toilets. TVP will accomplish this objective by providing on-the-job construction training for ten Tibetan villagers (with prior basic construction knowledge) who will be selected to build the toilets. The areas have been badly contaminated by human waste, old tires, plastics, bottles, cans, and other contaminants. Funding need: 5,714 USD or 8,910 AUD.
